I spent the better part of my college years zig-zagging across the country attending Phish shows. In all, I saw the band almost 90 times between 1995 and 2003. Needless to say, my education fizzled out in a flash and I ended up becoming a self taught music photographer and designer.
That was all long in the past by the time Phish came to town to play their first show in Asheville in June 2009. I had moved on from my jam band days, but I couldn't pass up the opportunity to photograph the band. They gave me free rein of the room - I could shoot from anywhere in the Asheville Civic Center except from on the stage for the duration of the entire show.
It was a great experience to catch them again in my hometown.
After this show in Asheville I only went back to see Phish perform one more time - I always claimed that if I ever had kids I'd make sure their first concert was a Phish show, so in 2018 I took my five-year-old daughter to sit on the lawn in Raleigh and take it in one more time. She said it was okay, but that The Rolling Stones concert was much better ;)
